Variable Speed Power Sander / Polisher
Variable Speed Power Sander / Polisher
Greenlight Variable Speed Surfboard Sander / Polisher
Built for surfboard builders, glassers, and repair work, the Greenlight Variable Speed Sander / Polisher gives you the control needed for every stage of surfboard finishing — from lap and fin box grinding to seal coat sanding to final swirl-free polish work.
Designed for Surfboard Sanding & Polishing
Unlike fixed-speed polishers that run too fast for delicate surfboard work, this variable speed unit allows you to dial in the correct RPM for each stage of board building. Proper speed control helps:
-
Prevent resin burn-through
-
Reduce heat buildup
-
Improve sanding consistency
-
Minimize swirl marks
-
Extend pad life
-
Improve polish quality
-
Maintain better control on rails and contours
The result is a cleaner finish with less risk of damaging your glass job.

Recommended Speeds for Surfboard Work
Correct speed selection is critical in surfboard glassing and finishing. Running too fast creates excess heat, clogs abrasives faster, and increases the chance of sanding through laps or burning resin.
Lap Grinding
Use a medium speed setting.
-
Enough RPM to cut efficiently
-
Lower heat buildup near rail laps
-
Better control around curves and transitions
Higher speeds can quickly overheat resin and dig into laps.
Hot Coat Sanding
Use low to medium speeds.
-
Helps keep the board cooler
-
Produces more even scratch patterns
-
Reduces chatter and gouging
-
Improves control on flats and rails
Variable speed becomes especially important with finer grits where excessive speed can load paper and create uneven finishes.
Fin Box Grinding
Use lower speeds with caution.
Fin boxes concentrate heat quickly. High RPM can soften surrounding resin or damage foam near the install area.
Lower speed settings provide:
-
Better precision
-
Reduced melting
-
Less risk of overcutting around boxes
Compounding
Use medium speeds.
Compounds need enough speed to activate properly without overheating the resin surface.
Proper variable speed control helps:
-
Improve gloss clarity
-
Prevent compound sling
-
Keep compound temperatures under control
Final Polishing
Use lower to medium polishing speeds.
Too much RPM during polishing can:
-
Burn the polish
-
Create swirl marks
-
Distort gloss finishes
-
Overheat dark pigments and tints
Controlled lower speeds produce a cleaner, deeper gloss finish.
Proper Use & Care
Surfboard sanding creates extremely fine resin and fiberglass dust. Proper maintenance is critical to extending motor life.
Important Maintenance Notes
-
Blow out the motor air vents after every use using compressed air
-
Resin and fiberglass dust buildup inside the motor can cause overheating and eventual electrical failure
-
Keep ventilation ports clean and unobstructed
-
Do not store the tool with dust packed into vents
-
Always allow the tool to come to a full stop before setting it down
