I’m finding that the surform just rips chunks of foam out and doesn’t work very well. I guess I’m using it wrong?
The surform is an old school tool for shaping, originally made for shaping wood, but surfboard shapers have been using it for decades. We developed the G-rasp as a foam-specific shaping tool to replace the surform and do a much better job. Nevertheless, if you shape with the surform on a 45 degree angle it will not tear the foam as much. It really doesn't matter though, tears are part of the process and are reduced when screening the board with sandshark screen and a soft foam shaping pad and then filled with surfboard sealing paste before fiberglassing.
