Natural Bamboo Fiberglass

Just as bamboo is a brilliant choice for surfboard stringers due to it's strength and eco-friendliness, bamboo fiberglass cloth is an excellent choice for glassing with Epoxy Resins.

Natural Bamboo fiber is extracted directly from Bamboo clumps - by crushing, grinding, wringing, and then combing the actual pulp from the Bamboo plants.

Our Natural Bamboo Fiberglass was developed for Greenlight Surfboard Supply as the absolute best material for environmentally friendly glassing.

It is specially knitted - as opposed to woven - to stretch in multiple directions allowing it to lap around rails very easily and creates a spring-like tension in the outer skin of a surfboard.

Specifications:
Bamboo glass is 6 oz in hand, approximately 4.5 oz applied to the board (stretched), absorbs epoxy more than traditional fiberglass (glass doesn't really absorb resin), and conservatively estimated to be as impact resistant and durable as 4 oz glass with our bench testing methods. It's actually a bit stonger but we don't want to overclaim anything.

Benefits of Using Natural Bamboo Fiberglass for Glassing Surfboards:

The bamboo fiberglass stretches to approx 125% from its original dimensions – you can glass a surfboard with approx 25% less fabric than any other material - with the same strength.  In this, less truly is more.
Glassing the fabric when stretched creates tension distributed around the entire surfboard providing a quicker rebound when flexed through a turn.
The bamboo fibers are biodegradable and decomposition does not cause any environmental pollution

Bamboo fiberglass is very easy to work with:
  • It laps around rails effortlessly
  • Bamboo fiberglass is sandable with any grit sandpaper
  • It is super easy to trim the laps when the epoxy has fully cured – just score with razor blade and fold over. It snaps cleanly right along the score line!
  • Bamboo fiberglass doesn't make you itch like traditional fiberglass

The stretch-glassing technique uses double sided tape to hold the bamboo fiberglass securely in place while you spread and saturate with epoxy resin.
Finalizing your lamination with our special laminating roller ensures a superior bond in the composite resulting in a strong and durable surfboard

The bamboo fabric is similar to 6 oz fiberglass but because it stretches and less fabric is required to glass a blank, the overall weight is about 4.5 oz.
We recommend using standard glassing schedules with the bamboo fiberglass and Resin Research epoxy.
